¿Dónde queda la intimidad en el mundo digital?

La princesa está triste. ¿Qué tendrá la princesa?
Los suspiros se escapan de su boca de fresa,
que ha perdido la risa, que ha perdido el color.
La princesa está pálida en su silla de oro;
está mudo el teclado de su clave sonoro,
y en un vaso, olvidada, se desmaya una flor.
Cuando Rubén Darío escribió su famosa Sonatina, la posibilidad de que un miembro de la familia Polumbo llegase a ostentar el título de Miss New Jersey no era ni siquiera un sueño remoto para los antepasados de Amy. Sin embargo, la citada corona le está costando un disgusto inesperado a esta joven veinteañera norteamericana, cuya "vida digital" ha saltado violentamente a la palestra por ¿culpa? de Facebook, una de las páginas de redes sociales más populares de internet.
Como muchos otros jóvenes -y no tan jóvenes- que navegan por la red, durante un tiempo Amy Polumbo se diviritió colgando sus fotografías personales en la citada web, para así compartirlas más fácilmente con sus amigos online. Por desgracia, en cuanto la corona de Miss New Jersey comenzó a brillar sobre su cabeza, aquellas imágenes se convirtieron en un arma de doble filo: apenas unos días más tarde, un chantajista las sustraía de Facebook para extorsionar con ellas a la recién estrenada miss.
Lamentablemente, la gravedad de este caso supera a otros similares, ya que Amy Polumbo había sido una mujer prudente -no en vano el Estado de New Jersey exige a su miss educación, buenas maneras y una reputación impune y completamente limpia durante todo su reinado- y las fotografías robadas estaban alojadas en una zona privada de su perfil, a la que sólo podían acceder sus amigos.
¿Fue Amy traicionada por una persona de su entorno social en quien confiaba? O tal vez se dejó engañar por una
identidad virtual tras la que pensó haber encontrado un/a nuevo/a amigo/a digital? Podemos hacernos muchas preguntas, tantas como Rubén Darío en su Sonatina… Pero en esta ocasión necesitamos encontrarles respuesta, porque nuestra vida digital exige prevenir tales ataques a la privacidad de las personas.
Para webs como Baquia la solución parece fácil y natural: a medida que aumente la frecuencia de incidentes como el de Amy Polumbo, los usuarios se irán volviendo cada vez más cautos en relación al contenido que suben a la web.
Por desgracia, yo no comparto esta opinión. Entre otras cosas, porque en el hipotético caso de que los usuarios se vayan volviendo más cautos, también me temo que los "agresores" de la intimidad digital irán refinando sus métodos para conseguir los fines perseguidos, y no sólo a nivel técnológico, sino también mediante el uso de nuevas técnicas de ingeniería social.
¿Dónde está entonces la solución? Desde el punto de vista de Telefónica I+D y el Equipo ICIV, en una apuesta firme por crear sistemas informáticos capaces de interactuar estrechamente con el usuario, de modo que garanticen tanto la gestión segura de su identidad como la privacidad de los documentos que almacenan en su memoria.
Por supuesto, se trata de un trabajo arduo y todavía en fase de prototipo, pero cuya vigencia se ve acentuada una vez más por incidentes como el que está viviendo Amy Polumbo, Miss New Jersey 2007

Casos como este te hacen desconfiar de las relaciones en la red. Realmente es muy muy necesario un sistema que consiga que la información no llegue a nadie que no quieras. Veo muy difícil llegar a controlar ésto.
Tienes toda la razón, Elena. La verdad es que se trata de un reto apasionante. Nuestra línea de trabajo junto a Telefónica I+D apuesta por elaborar herramientas que imiten los procesos humanos de gestión de información, con la hipótesis de desarrollar sistemas informáticos que actúen de forma similar.
Espero que artículos como este nos conciencien más a todos. El problema radica en que cuando haces algo en la red esto permanece para siempre. El verdadero miedo que yo tengo es quién analizará todos los rastros que todos dejamos en la red. Uniéndolos podrán llegar a descubrir que soy del Rayo, y me gustan los boleros, amén de los otros pecados más inconfesables.
Y cuando se sepan como los manejarán?
En el entorno informático, ¿qué soluciones se han dado o se están trabajando hasta ahora?.
Respondiendo a Elena, la solución más simple es: escribir contraseñas más complejas. De esta afirmación tan sencilla se ha evolucionado a sistemas de autenticación basados en tokens (estilo los certificados digitales y el DNI electrónico) y biométricos (huellas dactilares, escáneres oculares, etc).
La razón para pasar de un sistema basado en “algo que sé”, a “algo que tengo o que soy” es la falta de sensatez humana, que nos lleva a proteger nuestra identidad detrás de contraseñas tan sencillas como nuestro nombre, apellido, fecha de nacimiento o apellido de soltera de nuestra madre.
La identidad digital debería proponer un sistema de protección de la información “sensible” (aquella que nos interesa ocultar), que dependa de la identidad real, no tanto por algo que se sepa, sino por algo que se sea.
