Un homenaje a Angel Rivière (1949-2000)
- Yo la mamá y tú el bebé, ¿vale?
- ¡¡No!!, ¿por qué tengo que ser yo siempre el bebé?
- Bueno, un ratito tú y un ratito yo.
En este diálogo dos niños están planeando actuar "como si" fueran otras personas distintas a las que son. Se están repartiendo los papeles de madre e hijo y, al no haber consenso, recurren a la alternancia de identidades en períodos de tiempo breves. En el ámbito de la Psicología Evolutiva este tipo de ficción mantiene el nombre de "juego simbólico", el que le dió Jean Piaget a principios del siglo pasado.
El juego simbólico es muy frecuente en la primera infancia y constituye uno de los síntomas más representativos de un óptimo desarrollo intelectual. Según Angel Riviére, para llegar a jugar así el niño ha tenido que recorrer un largo camino conquistando espacios para la ficción. A través de la aplicación de mecanismos de suspensión va "dejando en el aire" aspectos de la realidad hasta alcanzar una dimensión lúdica en la que puede hacer y deshacer, ser y dejar de ser, sin que rijan las consecuencias adaptativas.
Las primeras "suspensiones" aparecen entre los 8 y 12 meses en entornos interactivos. Primero se deja en el aire la exploración del objeto sustituyéndose por el gesto de señalar. Imaginemos al bebé que, en vez de lanzarse hacia un cochecito nuevo para cogerlo, morderlo, estrujarlo o lanzarlo, nos mira y nos lo señala con el dedo índice para pedírnoslo o simplemente para mostrárnoslo. Después se deja en el aire la acción instrumental sustituyéndose por gestos enactivos. Imaginemos ahora a un niño que quiere bañarse y empieza a frotarse la tripita delante de su mamá, o a otro que sopla en el aire para que su papá le encienda una cerilla.
"Lo que está haciendo el niño es dejar en suspenso la acción, dejarla en el aire de tal manera que esa acción ya no ejerce una causación eficiente sobre el mundo: ya no toca el mundo, lo toca de lejos, lo toca semióticamente, lo toca para otro"

iguiendo a Angel Riviere, los gestos deícticos y los gestos enactivos son requisitos imprescindibles para que surja la ficción. Así, a partir del primer año de vida, el niño no se conforma con suspender acciones sino que llega a suspender las propiedades de los objetos. Las manifestaciones conductuales de esta ampliación del espacio de ficción ya se pueden etiquetar como juegos: el niño que utiliza una escoba como si fuera un caballo, el plátano como si fuera un teléfono…
"Si tú descubres que tu acción, en la medida en que ya no es una acción que empuja, que golpea, que clava, que apaga el fuego, que modifica o desplaza un objeto, sino que es una acción que ejerce semiosis, porque tú no terminas la acción, la dejas cortada a la mitad, la presentas -sólo la presentas- para el otro, comienzas a descubrir una cosa importante y es que no existe una relación unívoca entre los objetos y que las acciones y las propiedades mismas de los objetos se pueden dejar en suspenso, que las propiedades de lo real se pueden dejar en suspenso. Ahora sí que estamos hablando de juego de ficción en el que, en ese proceso de semiosis de sustituir un objeto con otro, tú puedes hacer como si la escoba en la que cabalgas fuese un caballo"
Sólo nos queda un paso para llegar al ejemplo que encabeza la entrada: la capacidad para alterar las identidades. Paul Harris describe su adquisición en tres etapas:
1. Entre los 12 y los 13 meses el niño empieza a realizar acciones "en el vacío": con un cojín en el suelo hace como si durmiera, con un cacharrito hace como si comiera. El referente es siempre el propio niño.
2. A partir de los 18 meses empieza a ejercer este tipo de acciones sobre un receptor pasivo: da de comer o duerme a un muñeco.
3. A partir de los 2 años y medio convierte al muñeco en un agente independiente, con mente propia. Como un director de teatro va generando monólogos de este tipo: "Cuqui tiene sed. Va a la cocina…¡No, que me da miedo el pasillo!. Toma, Cuqui, yo te doy agua. No me gusta, quiero leche….".
Los muñecos entran en el mundo de ficción abriendo el paso a las personas de carne y hueso. El niño descubre que se pueden dejar en el aire las propiedades de las personas. Es posible jugar a transformarse y a transformar a los demás. Yo puedo ser mi mamá y mi hermana puede ser el bebé. Pero si mi hermana no quiere jugar así, no importa, yo también puedo ser el bebé.

Un espacio de ficción que comienza en la infancia y que está empezando a ser estudiado en Psicología Evolutiva es el de los amigos imaginarios.
Os cuento mi experiencia: Yo tenía dos amigos imaginarios (tenían nombre pero no lo recuerdo) que pertenecían al Mundo de los Invisibles. En ese mundo sólo podía entrar yo y lo hacía sobre todo en el camino casa-colegio y en los paseos familiares.
El planteamiento básico era que yo les enseñaba todo lo que iba aprendiendo. Aún recuerdo que les enseñé a saltar a la goma.
Han sido los mejores alumnos que he tenido. Siempre admirados de lo que yo sabía y siempre esforzándose por conseguirlo.

Sí, es interesante el origen social de la ficción. Los niños que tienen trastornos en el desarrollo social también tienen deficiencias en el juego simbólico.
Hace tiempo, unos amigos míos tuvieron instalarse en Estados Unidos por motivos de trabajo, llevando consigo a sus dos hijos pequeños, de 2 y 7 años. Como es lógico, ninguno de los niños sabía hablar inglés, y quizá por eso el mayor desarrolló un ‘amigo invisible’, al que puso un nombre americano. La historia duró bastante tiempo, hasta que un día mi amiga descubrió que su hijo hablaba en inglés con su amigo invisible… Y a partir de entonces, comenzó a desprenderse de él.
Es un ejemplo muy bonito sobre la necesidad de la ficción. En este caso para facilitar la adaptación a un entorno nuevo, en el que se habla un idioma distinto. En la actualidad se cree que la ficción que se desarrolla en los sueños también tiene esta función: de entrenamiento virtual en un espacion sin consecuencias adaptativas.
Cuando tenía tres o cuatro años, se me antojó un peluche de oso panda, el cual conseguí tras vestirme sin ayuda de mis padres durante una semana. Este peluche, que aún hoy conservo, era mi compañero de noche. La oscuridad era algo que me asustaba, y todas las noches mantenía un diálogo con mi osito de peluche antes de dormir, le daba un beso y nos dormíamos juntos. Cada vez que amanecía con mi osito en el suelo, le recogía rápidamente, pues me entristecía que el pobrecito se hubiera hecho daño al caer de la cama, le daba besitos para curarle, le abrazaba y le volvía a meter en la cama. Nunca le puse nombre, tampoco lo usé fuera de este contexto, pero me lo llevaba siempre de paseo como compañía sin mantener diálogos con él fuera de la cama. Mi osito que tiene ya 20 años me ayudó a dormir sin miedos en la oscuridad.
