La memoria está en los besos, sentenció Antonio Mercero, y Mara Torres -presentadora de La 2 Noticias- puso cara de póker, como si temiera que la entrevista se le escapase de las manos.
Fue el pasado 19 de septiembre, cuando el director acudió a promocionar ¿Y tú quién eres?, su última película, donde el actor Manuel Aleixandre encarna a un paciente de Alzheimer en las primeras fases de la enfermedad.
Hace ya unos meses, en este blog se habló de la pérdida de la identidad que provoca el trastorno descubierto en 1906 por Alois Alzheimer. Por eso no tengo intención de volver ahora sobre el tema, sino de reflexionar sobre algunos otros que se derivan de la conversación entre Antonio Mercero y Mara Torres, y estrechamente vinculados a las facetas virtuales de nuestra vida digital.
Cuando Mercero decía la memoria está en los besos, se refería de un modo poético al hecho de que la información con carga emocional establece huellas mnésicas más profundas y duraderas que los datos asépticos, como mi compañera Pilar Gallo ha señalado en entradas anteriores.
Sin embargo, el primer problema que ingenieros y usuarios encontraron al empezar a poblar este mundo digital en que ahora nos movemos como peces -binarios- en el agua, era la imposibilidad de intercambiar "besos", entendidos como una metonimia de la afectividad humana… Y precisamente un 19 de septiembre de 1982, Scott E. Fahlman transmitió el primer emoticono en las BBS de la Facultad de Informática de la Universidad Carnegie Mellon, con la única intención de dotar de un significado emocional a las comunicaciones escritas.
Por supuesto, los términos tecnológicos han cambiado bastante desde aquellas caritas diseñadas en código ASCII hasta las actuales prácticas de sexo virtual en Second Life, pero lo que parece innegable es que la vida digital necesita acompañerse de una expresión emocional, a imagen y semejanza de la que se desarrolla fuera de la web.
Tal vez por eso en su entrada "Ya nada es eterno, espero" José Sánchez indicaba que, según encuestas del Reino Unido, las relaciones virtuales ya superan a las reales, y diversas investigaciones en redes sociales digitales corroboran este dato, destacando la fuerza de los lazos afectivos que se generan en entornos digitales.
Ahora bien, si como hemos postulado en la Tercera Ley del Yo Digital, nuestra identidad biológica no es algo distinto, ajeno e independiente de nuestra(s) identidad(es) virtuales, sino que todas ellas interactúan vivamente entre sí, produciendo la emergencia de un sistema cognitivo conjunto que se retroalimenta, enriquece y modifica con cada intercambio, ¿qué recuerdos dejarán en nosotros esos amig@s digitales de los que sólo conocemos su nick y su avatar? ¿Qué huella mnésica será más estable: la producida por una vibrante partida de Última contra 3.000 jugadores online, o la de un Risk compartido con tu grupo de amigos y sus respectivas cervezas?
¿Qué recuerdos preservarán durante más tiempo los enfermos de Alzheimer o Parkinson del 2050, los derivados de su vida analógica, o de sus experiencias digitales? ¿Podrán desentrañar unos de otros los psicólogos, psiquiátras, neurólogos y terapeutas ocupacionales que los asistan?
Tal vez no sea necesario hacerlo, y nuestra vida digital de hoy nos ayude a luchar mañana contra las demencias que amenazan con borrar incluso la memoria que atesoran los besos.

Muy interesante. Los sucesos que se recuerdan mejor son los vinculados con experiencias emocionales tanto negativas como positivas. El Yo Digital permite conectar información y emoción. Esto tendrá el doble efecto que sugiere Nuria:
1. Los recuerdos digitales se recordarán igual que los biológicos porque ambos tendrán la huella emocional
2. El soporte digital podrá suplir al biológico cuando este comience a deteriorarse para que

Claro que el problema podría venir si no hubiera besos que recordar… Estoy pensando en los hikikomori japoneses, y sus “vidas virtuales” para escapar de la presión social. ¿Pueden las amistades online ejercer un efecto protector similar al que nos dan nuestras redes sociales analógias?
