Neurobiología del yo
¿Nuestro sentimiento de la propia identidad depende de alguna región cerebral en particular o todas son igualmente importantes? Los estudios de
neuroimagen que pretenden desentrañar cómo el cerebro engendra de forma constante el sentimiento de identidad se han apoyado en que la información que se etiqueta como referente al propio yo se recuerda mejor.
Como señala Carl Zimmer en un artículo publicado en el número de Enero de 2006 de Investigación y Ciencia, el que la información relacionada con el yo se recuerde mejor tiene dos posibles interpretaciones. La primera sería que recordamos mejor esa información porque estamos más familiarizados con nosotros mismos que con los demás. La segunda interpretación sería que el cerebro se vale de un sistema distinto y más eficiente para procesar la información concerniente al yo, es decir, se procesa de una manera especial la información relacionada con el yo.
Se han realizado diversos experimentos para tratar de aclarar estas cuestiones. Por ejemplo, en un experimento se presentó una lista de palabras y se pidió a los participantes que decidieran, por una parte, cuáles de esas palabras se les podían aplicar a ellos mismos y, por otra parte, cuáles se podían aplicar a otras personas. Se observó que las preguntas concernientes al yo desencadenaban un patrón de actividad cerebral diferente respecto de las preguntas concernientes a otras personas. En otro experimento participaron futbolistas y actores, que juzgaron adjetivos que valían mejor para uno de los dos grupos (atlético o regateador para los primeros y cómico o dramático para los segundos) y adjetivos inespecíficos (desordenado o fiable). Al pedir que decidieran, uno a uno, si los adjetivos les eran aplicables o no, se observó una activación cerebral distinta ante los adjetivos que estaban relacionados con la propia profesión. Los resultados experimentales, por lo tanto, parecen encajar mejor con la interpretación de que el cerebro utiliza un sistema distinto para procesar la información referente al yo. También parece que algunas áreas cerebrales podrían ser especialmente relevantes dentro de dicho sistema (por ejemplo, la corteza prefrontal medial).
En cualquier caso, es importante tener en cuenta que las investigaciones sobre la red de la propia identidad y su funcionamiento son muy recientes. De momento, los hallazgos obtenidos no permiten descartar ninguna de las interpretaciones propuestas hasta la fecha para explicar por qué recordamos mejor la información que se refiere a nosotros.

La base fisológica de la identidad sería el conjunto de representaciones sobre el estado de nuestro cuerpo pasadas y presentes a partir de las cuales hemos procesado y procesamos el mundo. Es muy necesaria la reflexión en torno a este tipo de investigaciones en el diseño de un YO DIGITAL. Hasta ahora nuestro yo se manifestaba en nuestra vida digital en pequeños detalles: la manera de organizar la información, el tipo de letra, el salvapantallas… Al no ser suficiente YO la recuperación de la información y todas las tareas que realizamos conjuntamente con nuestro ordenador siguen siendo bastante pesadas. Nuestra sugerencia fue meter más YO, dejar que los datos se tiñeran de emoción, se ubicaran temporalmente en una historia personal y en unos contextos vitales. Y, a partir de ahí, generar una dinámica de identidad digital que llegue a borrar las fronteras con la identidad biológica.
