El metaverso lejano
Corría el año 1992 cuando Neal Stephenson acuñó el término metaverso para describir un entorno de ficción donde los humanos interactuaban social y económicamente mediante iconos, moviéndose para ello dentro del soporte de un ciberespacio que servía como metáfora del mundo real, aunque sin las limitaciones físicas de éste.
Tuvieron que pasar cerca de diez años -con sus correspondientes campanadas en el carrillón de la Puerta del Sol- para que los metaversos de Stephenson se hiciesen "realidad" en el Universo digital.
En 2007, Habbo, Second Life y muchos otros juegos de rol multijugador masivo online [MMORPG] como los célebres Neverwinter Nights , Ultima Online , EverQuest , World of Warcraft o Guild Wars cuentan con millones de avatares dispuestos a bailar, charlar, discutir, establecer alianzas, comprar o vender armas, destronar reyes, levantar imperios, masacrar ciudades o enriquecerse virtualmente gracias a la especulación digital.
Saltando de un metaverso a otro, yo puedo ser un jugador de basquet, un troll sanguinario, una espiritual elfa nocturna, un hipnotizador experto en provocar el caos, o una sensual avispa con cabeza de gato, dispuesta a mantener relaciones con cualquier avatar que me ofrezca tantos linden dolars como cuestan mis favores.
Aunque entra de lleno en el objeto de estudio del Grupo ICIV, en este post no tengo intención de analizar las complicaciones/beneficios que podrían derivarse la fragmentación identitaria que se desprende de nuestra inmersión en los citados metaversos digitales, sino de algo mucho más prosaico: la enorme brecha que aún separa la vida analógica de la experiencia virtual.
El 22 de septiembre de 2007, Madrid celebró la segunda edición de La Noche En Blanco, manifestación cultural gratuita y abierta destinada a fomentar, difundir y popularizar la creación contemporánea en todas sus formas: artes plásticas, proyecciones cinematográficas, música, representaciones teatrales, circenses, etc.
Dentro de todas las propuestas de este año, hubo una que llamó especialmente mi atención: Two Gardens Between Us , del profesor Mario Paul Martínez Fabre.
¿Su objetivo? Convertir los jardines del Palacete del Marqués de Salamanca, sede de la Fundación Astroc , en un espacio de interconexión entre lo digital y lo analógico. Para ser exactos, entre los participantes de La Noche En Blanco y la comunidad virtual de Second Life.
En el mundo real caía una lluvia fina y tibia que invitaba a pensar en naves en llamas más allá de Orión, mientras el Palacete del Marqués de Salamanca resplandecía bajo los focos dorados.
En mitad del jardín, dos pantallas blancas presagiaban el encuentro entre el metaverso y la vida física, que sendas webcams camufladas en las palmeras se encargarían de hacer realidad, como si al fin se hubiese fabricado un azogue lo bastante puro como para recrear el espejo mágico de Alicia.
Por desgracia, cuando nos acercamos a ellas, la ilusión del contacto se desvaneció. Al otro lado del ciberespacio, delante de la pantalla que representaba el jardín de la Fundación Astroc, sólo se podían ver las espaldas digitales de cuatro avatares despistados. Tanto, quizá, como los visitantes de carne y hueso del jardín real.
¿Por qué las cámaras de Second Life no estaban colocadas de tal forma que los humanos noctámbulos pudiéramos ver los rostros de los avatares que se habían congregado en la recreación virtual del jardín? ¿Les sucedía lo mismo a ell@s con nuestras imágenes?
Se suponía que íbamos a disfrutar de un encuentro visual y sonoro entre lo digital y lo analógico, pero por los altavoces estratégicamente dispersos por los alcorques de los árboles no llegaba más que el croar electrónico de una rana virtual, y los maullidos sincopados de un gato digital, al que un avatar "desalmado" -¿o simplemente aburrido?- había metido en la fuente.
¿Dónde estaba la interconexión entre lo digital y lo analógico? ¿Confluyeron en algún momento el metaverso recién nacido con la experiencia artística y cultural en pañales de La Noche en Blanco? Sólo puedo decir que mientras nosotros estuvimos allí, no.
Parece que, como a los camaleones de Escher, aún nos constriñen demasiadas barreras técnicas, mecánicas y psicológicas para que nuestras identidades analógicas y digitales encuentren un espacio de comunicación eficaz.
Por deformación profesional me interesan las barreras psicológicas. En El Quijote se recrean los peligros de la ficción (y su magia literaria). Algunas patológías clínicas tienen como síntoma central la desconexión con lo real. El consumo de ciertas drogas también… ¿Es necesario un control de realidad?, ¿cómo sería al sumarse un inabarcable mundo digital?
Yo tengo la sensación (aunque en la actualidad carezco de datos científicos para confirmarla) de que en los metaversos digitales como Habbo o Second Life siguen operando muchas de las normas sociales que funcionan en nuestro mundo analógico.
Por supuesto, no es lo mismo hablar de estos metaversos que de los MMORPG, donde las reglas de juego marcan la interacción… Pero en términos generales, diría que los avatares mantienen interacciones muy semejantes a las de la “vida cotidiana”. Hay más desinhibición en conductas tabú como la compra/venta de armas, o la facilidad para mantener relaciones sexuales, pero no podemos olvidar que en el fondo se trata de personas relacionándose con personas, aunque unas y otras se hayan convertido en imágenes digitales.
Pero son yoes diferentes: yoes ideales, yoes soñados, yoes desinhibidos, yoes ocultos…. Es como si el entorno digital les abriera la posibilidad de interaccionar, lo que implica crecimiento en alguna dirección
Totalmente de acuerdo, Pilar: la “oferta” de la vida digital permite sacar a la luz parte de esos yoes ideales que todo el mundo tenemos (digo “parte” porque ya sabes que los metaversos nunca dejan una completa libertad a los usuarios; por ejemplo, en Second Life existen reglas para definir el nombre de tu avatar)
Sin embargo, para que un yo ideal, soñado, oculto o desinhibido se exprese de verdad, es imprescindible que el usuario mantenga coherencia en dicha expresión (como ocurre en la vida analógica). ¿Y de qué depende esa coherencia?
En primer lugar, de la capacidad de almacenar y recordar -recrear- esas interacciones digitales. En segundo lugar, de las normas sociales de interacción que imperen en dichos metaversos.
En tercer lugar… Eso es otra historia, y deberá ser contada -e investigada- en otra ocasión, como decía Michael Ende en “La Historia interminable”
