Once upon a time…
… Exisitió un fabuloso reino conocido por el nombre de Britannia. ¿Cómo, que no has oído hablar de él? Pues sigue leyendo, amig@ mío.
Edificado sobre las ruinas del extinto mundo de Sosaria, Britannia pronto se convirtió en una tierra de alianzas e intrigas donde artesanos, pensadores y artistas se las veían a diario con piratas, magos, demonios y paladines, en cientos de batallas tan estratégicas como cruentas que… ¿Que por qué te cuento todo esto?
Pues porque voy a presentarte al hombre más poderoso de aquél mítico reino, cuya regencia asumió tras derrotar en combate al maligno hechicero Mondain y su vástago Exodus: LORD BRITISH
O lo que es lo mismo, la identidad virtual de Richard Garriott (Cambridge, 1961), programador, diseñador de juegos, fundador de Origin Systems, y futuro turista espacial en octubre de 2008
En el mundo analógico, Garriott -hijo del científico y astronauta Owen K. Garriott- comenzó su andadura tecnológica programando juegos de fantasía en el instituto (Clear Creek High School, en Texas, USA), que dejaba probar gratuitamente a sus compañeros. Cuenta la leyenda que fue precisamente allí donde unos compañeros de curso superior le pusieron el sobrenombre de Lord British, a causa de su acento británico… aunque hay versiones para todos los gustos. ¡Y no es para menos!
Sea como fuere, en 1980 Richard Garriott publica Akalabeth , su primer juego (cuyos beneficios, por cierto, le sirven para financiarse la Universidad), dentro del cual usa esporádicamente la identidad de Lord British.
La entidad de dicho personaje se consolida a lo largo de la saga de juegos Ultima (desde 1981 hasta la actualidad) alcanzando su punto de inflexión en 1995, cuando un equipo de desarrolladores compuesto por Starr Long, Rick Delashmit, Raph Koster y el propio Garriott se embarca en la programación de una de las fantasías del gobernador de Britannia: reunir a miles de personas en un mundo virtual de espada y brujería. Este universo digital se llamó Ultima Online [UO], vio la luz en 1996, y a día de hoy figura en el libro Guiness de los records por ser el MMORPG que más tiempo ha estado online de la historia de Internet.
El elemento que justifica dedicar una entrada de este blog a Richard Garriott/Lord British es que investido de esta identidad virtual, Garriott desempeña un papel fundamental en numerosas instituciones de las distintas versiones de Ultima, de tal manera que muchas tramas secundarias giran en torno a sus aventuras, o sus proyectos de trabajos públicos.
Así por ejemplo, el 8 de agosto de 1997, un personaje jugador de UO causó un terremoto digital en el metaverso MMORPG al asesinar a Lord British. Su acción no sólo supuso el primer "magnicidio" virtual de la Historia, sino que sentó un precedente en este metaverso, demostrando que el reto de dar muerte al gobernador de Britannia, presente a lo largo de la saga, quedaba al alcance de los jugadores. Todo un elogio para la identidad digital de Richard Garriott, qué duda cabe.
Sin embargo, este cruce de identidades virtuales y analógicas no termina aquí, sino que se extiende al mundo de interacciones físicas que llamamos "vida real".
No hay más que desplazarse hasta Austin (Texas), y echar una ojeada al singular edificio que se eleva en la cima de una colina próxima a la ciudad. Su nombre es Britannia Manor, y alberga una de las casas encantadas más famosas y mejor construidas del país. 
Hasta 1995, en Britannia Manor -que, coincidencias del destino, comparte nombre con el castillo de Lord British en UO- se celebraba una macro-fiesta gratuita por Halloween.
Tras muchas horas de paciente espera para conseguir los pases generosamente concedidos por el dueño de la propiedad, las personas que accedían a su interior se sumergían en una experiencia total de rol en vivo. Ambientada en la época medieval, los jugadores tenían que seguir pistas, descifrar misterios y sortear peligros, hasta el punto de que no era extraño que los equipos "perdieran" miembros en las pruebas de remo, tiro con arco o escalada a los que se enfrentaban para escapar de las trampas y redes de pasadizos secretos de la casa. Claro que también podían tener suerte, y acceder a la habitación secreta donde su propietario conserva sus posesiones más valiosa: fósiles de dinosaurio, un ataúd con un esqueleto humano, o un auténtico kit del siglo XVI para cazar vampiros.
¿Cómo, que no te he dicho quién es el señor de tan estrafalarios dominios? Pues ni más ni menos que un tal Richard Garriott, a quien todos conocen como… LORD BRITISH
Me encantan las historia de exito donde triunfa la gente con talento, como este Lord British. Lástima que no lo tenga yo y que el que tengo no me llegue para siquiera poder tener el tiempo suficiente y entrar en Britannia u otros metaversos. Con lo que también siento envidia de la escritora del post.
Me alegra que te haya gustado el post, Corsario. En cuanto a la relación entre éxito y talento, yo diría que el verdadero talento consiste en dos factores: observación y creatividad. Es decir, saber captar las demandas/ intereses/ necesidades del entorno que nos rodea, y darles forma. Lord British lo hizo con la saga Ultima, pero también Emilio Bellvis con su fregona.
Qué curiosa la historia de este hombre… Seguro que si no se hubiera inventado el personaje de Lord British y le hubiera dado tanta relevancia dentro de la saga, nunca habría pasado de ser un programador desconocido, aunque fuera el verdadero “padre” de todos los juegos Última. En cierto modo, su identidad virtual se volvió más importante que su identidad real, ¿no?
No sé si “más importante”, Miss Secret, pero lo que es innegable que su identidad virtual interactuó y modificó la analógica -ya sabes que no me gusta decir “real-, hasta el punto de transformar su propia vivienda en una especie de castillo medieval, digno de su yo digital
Ya lo he mencionado en otra ocasión, pero insisto. ¿No es nuestro Quijote un ejemplo de como una identidad virtual -en este caso de ficción- puede llegar a llenar la existencia real?. Creo que Cervantes se anticipó unos cuantos siglos en el planteamiento de este tema. Creo que la magia del libro está en las distintas perspectivas desde las que enfocar lo “real”, si es que lo real existe…
