El Condado de Santa Clara, en California, se despliega a lo largo de la orilla suroeste de la Bahía de San Francisco. El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, fundado en 1777, es hoy su capital –San José–, además de la población hispana más antigua de California y su primera capital. Santa Clara fue siempre un fértil y soleado valle, que proveía de suministros agrícolas a los destacamentos militares cercanos.
El Centro de Investigación de Xerox en Palo Alto –más conocido como Xerox PARC–, en Santa Clara, lleva desde 1970 cosechando contribuciones al desarrollo de las nuevas tecnologías que tanto han cambiado nuestras vidas como la interfaz gráfica de usuario (GUI), merced a la cual ya no tenemos que entendernos con el ordenador introduciendo comandos en una pantalla negra –como con aquel inquietante C:\ de MSDOS–, sino que podemos pulsar y manipular iconos, ventanas y áreas de trabajo, o el propio ratón con el que hacemos todo eso. Sólo un año después, en 1971, un periodista acuñaría la expresión Silicon Valley para describir la formidable proliferación de empresas relacionadas con la fabricación de circuitos integrados y computadoras que había conocido el valle de Santa Clara.
Hace unas semanas, los ingenieros de PARC informaron de que, en colaboración con Dai Nippon Printing, han desarrollado un software capaz de hacer llegar a nuestro teléfono móvil recomendaciones de tiendas, restaurantes o actividades de ocio adaptadas al lugar en qué nos encontramos, la fecha y la hora, y nuestros gustos personales. Del invento, bautizado como Magitti, se ha hecho eco recientemente la prestigiosa revista electrónica de ciencia, tecnología, sociedad y cultura Tendencias21.
Cuando Magitti esté en nuestros teléfonos móviles, se convertirá en una parte de nuestro yo digital, como ahora lo es la lista de contactos o la agenda. Pero, igual que la mayor parte de las listas de contactos y agendas actuales, su relación con nosotros no será todo lo fluida que desearíamos, o que podemos imaginar.
La razón es que Magitti no tiene en cuenta cómo me siento, si estoy trabajando o dando una vuelta, si estoy con compañeros de trabajo o con mi jefe, o con unos viejos amigos de la Universidad, si he conseguido o no acabar el proyecto al que llevo toda la semana dando vueltas, qué opinan de ese restaurante o de esa película mis amigos –pero sólo aquellos de cuyos gustos me fío–, o, aunque esté en casa o en un café, cuál de mis identidades en cuál de los metaversos que suelo transitar es la que prima en este momento –si soy el reputado empresario o el rey de los trasgos. Si Magitti supiera todo eso, podría hacernos sugerencias mucho más –digamos– sugerentes, o podría incluso sospechar cuándo no tengo ganas de recibir sugerencias. Todo eso, y un buen número de cosas más, es lo que está preparado para incorporar el sistema de gestión de conocimiento autobiográfico, emocional y social del Yo Digital.
¿De verdad vuestro Yo Digital puede reconocer cómo me siento, o si estoy con mis amigos? El otro día leí que Windows dice q ha creado un sofwar capaz de leer la mente… ¿Funciona con eso el Yo Digital?
Pero la intimidad del yo quedará preservada ¿no?
