¿A quién le importa lo que yo haga?
¿A quién le importa lo que yo diga?
Yo soy así, y así seguiré, nunca cambiaré
Como se puede apreciar, nos encontramos ante una filosofía diametralmente opuesta a las recomendaciones clásicas del refranero castellano: donde fueres haz lo que vieres; o como te presentes, así te mirará la gente.
¿Quién está más acertado: el "inmovilismo" de Dinarama, o la "plasticidad" del refranero? ¿Cómo nos comportamos en realidad los seres humanos cuando interactuamos entre nosotros?
Tanto la Sociología como la Psicología Social han estudiado ampliamente el fenómeno de las relaciones interpersonales y las autopresentaciones (James, 1890; Cooley, 1902; Mead, 1934; Festinger, 1954; Goffman, 1959, 1967; Alexander y Rudd, 1981, Baumeister y Hutton, 1987; y un largo etcétera), debido al complejo cruce entre variables de personalidad y demandas específicas del entorno social que se produce durante las mismas.
AUTOCONCEPTO Y AUTOESTIMA
Desde la Psicología Social se denomina autoconcepto al conjunto de conocimientos y convicciones que una persona sostiene acerca de sus propios atributos, mientras que la autoestima se refiere a la valoración que hacemos de nosotros mismos, ya sea de modo holístico -autoestima general- o en relación a un área concreta de nuestra identidad -académica, profesional, personal, etc-
Ahora bien, ¿cómo se construye este conjunto de afirmaciones? ¿En base a qué elementos otorgamos las valoraciones que nos hacen sentirnos mejor o peor con nosotros mismos? Numerosas pruebas empíricas demuestran que el autoconcepto se construye a partir de dos vías fundamentales
- Valoraciones transmitidas por personas relevantes en la vida del individuo -padres, amigos, parejas, etc- (McNulty y Swann, 1994; Baldwin y Holmes, 1987)
- Procesos de comparación social con personas y grupos similares a nosotros en algún atributo representativo para dicha categoría de comparación (Turner, 1999) Es decir, cuando preguntamos a un alumno universitario si es bueno jugando al baloncesto, es más probable que su respuesta venga dada por el resultado de la comparación con sus compañeros de estudios -quizá con los miembros del equipo de la facultad- que por el contraste con la selección española de baloncesto.
IDENTIDADES SITUADAS
En el epígrafe anterior hemos visto que el autoconcepto se compone de elementos muy diversos. Sin embargo, es evidente que no hacemos uso de todos ellos para presentarnos al resto de los invitados de una fiesta donde sólo conocemos a nuestro anfitrión.
El sociólogo y escritor Erving Goffman (1922-1982) propuso en su enfoque dramatúrgico que las personas interactuamos como si estuviéramos representando una obra de teatro, donde destaca lo que él denominó apariencia: la valoración social positiva que presentamos sobre nosotros mismos en dicha interacción.
La razón que explica dicha presentación positiva es sencilla: controlar las impresiones que los demás se forman de nosotros, porque nos gusta agradar a los otros -audiencia favorable- (Baumeister y Hutton, 1987), pero también porque nos gusta acercarnos al máximo al ideal de persona que desearíamos ser -autoconstrucción- (Baumeister, 1996).
Por supuesto, estos fenómenos no son generales en todas las presentaciones que mantenemos en la vida cotidiana, sino que varían en función del "escenario" de interacción en el que nos encontramos, de ahí que Alexander y Rudd (1981) hablen de identidades situadas, sometidas a constantes procesos de negociación.
Es decir, una chica que se esfuerza por presentarse ante sus compañeros de clase como líder -destacando sus rasgos asertivos y conductas proactivas- , como intelectual ante sus profesores -potenciando su vena crítica, y demostrando conocimientos superiores a la media-, y como hiperfemenina ante su novio -fomentando una imagen tierna, desvalida y superficial- probablemente se verá obligada a negociar la combinación de esas identidades situadas el día de su graduación, cuando tenga que interactuar con todos esos grupos en un mismo escenario.
AUTOOBSERVACIÓN
Ahora bien, es un hecho contrastado que no todas las personas utilizamos las mismas estrategias para presentarnos: basta con ver el proceso de selección de candidatos de la película Full Monty para darnos cuenta.
Así, entendemos por autoobservación el acto de ajustar nuestra conducta a las normas de la situación, controlando la presentación verbal y no verbal de uno mismo para responder a o las expectativas de los demás (Snyder, 1974, 1979, 1987)
Los individuos que puntúan bajo en autoobsevación destacan por la congruencia de su conducta, independientemente de la situación social en la que se encuentren. Se suele decir que tiene un "yo de principios", así como una imagen personal más definida, y un estilo de presentación más sincero y menos flexible… Justo como nos proponen en A quién le importa.
Por contra, las personas con alto grado de autoobservación se preocupan mucho por lo apropiado de su comportamiento, de modo que están muy atentas a las señales que transmiten quienes les rodean acerca de lo que es o no adecuado en cada contexto. Por este motivo son muy capaces de cambiar su forma de presentarse, y poseen un variado repertorio de conductas diferentes ante situaciones distintas. Se suele decir que tienen un "yo pragmático"
Es decir, si una persona con alto grado de autoobservación tuviese que pensar en los términos que sirvieron de introducción a este post, probablemente se mostraría más conforme con la filosofía del refranero que con la de Alaska y Dinarama.
Hemos analizado los principales elementos que toman parte en el proceso de presentación social de las identidades individuales del ser humano en la interacción social… ¿Pero qué ocurre en cuando dos personas interactúan en el mundo digital? ¿Se mantienen estos mismos elementos? ¿Surgen nuevos patrones de relación? ¿Entran en juego otros componentes de la identidad? Trataremos de encontrar respuesta a estas preguntas en próximas entradas.
Sí, es curioso que hay personas que siempre son iguales y otras que son como camaleones. Entre los actores de cine, Jhony Deep sería un ejemplo de lo primero y Leto de lo segundo.
Lo más llamativo del proceso, Irene, es que cuando preguntamos a personas altas y bajas en autoobservación, ambas tienen la misma sensación de consistencia interna al evaluar su conducta.

Más bien se trata de un proceso de reducción de la disonancia cognitiva. Es decir, a todos nos gusta tener la sensación de que nuestro comportamiento es consistente a lo largo del tiempo, y congruente con nuestras actitudes e ideas.
En consecuencia, tanto si tendemos a adaptar nuestra conducta a las circunstancias (alta autoobservación) como si procuramos mantener un “yo de principios” (baja autoobservación), siempre haremos interpretaciones que nos permitan conservar esa sensación de consistencia interna.

Has señalado un aspecto muy importante en el tema de la identidad, Cata, y es que la versatilidad de las facetas identitarias no tiene nada que ver con el cinismo, la hipocresía o la mentira. Entre otras cosas, porque estas últimas son procesos de engaño consciente, mientras que el hecho de alternar nuestras presentaciones sociales es un acto automático, en el cual intervienen otras variables, como las características de personalidad (autoobservación), el aprendizaje, la socialización y, por supuesto, los valores.
