Identidades situadas [III]: contextos, roles y grupos

Igual que ocurre en nuestra vida analógica, el ser humano virtual también es un animal social: conversamos con nuestros amigos, familiares y conocidos a través de herramientas como MSN Messenger o Twitter, entramos en relaciones de cooperación/competición en diversos MMORPG, expresamos libremente nuestras opiniones en la blogosfera, y establecemos contactos con nicks y avatares a cuyos propietarios jamás conoceremos personalmente en multitud de foros y chats, ya sean gráficos o visuales, como Habbo Hotel o Second Life… Y en todas y cada una de estas relaciones sólo mostramos aquellas facetas de nuestra identidad que deseamos dar a conocer en ese preciso instante.
Así pues, parece que nuestras interacciones virtuales siguen un patrón similar a nuestras relaciones sociales analógicas, en lo que respecta a la presentación social del yo, puesto que seleccionamos aquellos elementos de nuestra identidad que a priori nos resultan más adecuados para cada contexto social, en función del rol que aspiramos a desempeñar en él.
Por ejemplo, si entro un foro con intención de actuar como troll y desbaratar el hilo de una conversación, es porque previamente he seleccionado de forma automática -esto es, sin necesidad de hacer primero un ejercicio de reflexión consciente- los elementos de mi identidad que mejor me permiten desempeñar ese papel: sarcasmo, actitudes radicales, agresividad, etc.
Sin embargo, es evidente que entre la identidad analógica y la virtual existen diferencias ostensibles en algunos elementos esenciales. Por ejemplo, en la interacción social que se ejerce dentro de los grupos con los que nos relacionamos. En el siguiente cuadro se pueden ver, de forma esquemática, en qué consisten esas diferencias.
Lo cierto es que en el mundo analógico no nos relacionamos con quien queremos, sino con quien podemos. Dicho de otro modo, nuestras interacciones se ven constreñidas por una serie de aspectos físicos y territoriales, que nos llevan a tratar con personas que viven en nuestro barrio, se sientan a nuestro lado en clase, o trabajan en la misma planta que nosotros. En cambio, en el mundo virtual no existen las fronteras, y basta con teclear una URL y saber escribir un inglés rudimentario para interactuar con CUALQUIER ser humano "digitalizado". Por consiguiente, las únicas barreras para nuestras relaciones digitales son nuestros propios gustos, intereses u opiniones.
En el mundo analógico, los grupos ejercen un vasto control social: nuestros amigos se quejan de que les dedicamos poco tiempo cuando pasan meses sin que nos veamos, los miembros de la peña senderista a la que pertenecemos nos recriminan si no vamos a la excursión del último sábado del mes, y nuestra familia demanda que celebremos la Nochebuena en casa de los abuelos… Aduciendo para ello una serie de normas sociales implícitas que exigen el cumplimiento de ciertos compromisos grupales, so pena de ser excluido del grupo si no se acatan. ¿Ocurre lo mismo en el mundo virtual? En términos generales, no, ya que en ese entorno, los individuos gozamos de una mayor libertad para transitar entre comunidades virtuales, incluso aunque éstas se encuentren enemistadas entre sí. Basta con cambiar de nick o de avatar.
Estas diferencias dan lugar a los tres últimos contrastes que se observan en el esquema superior:
- LAZOS SOCIALES: en el mundo analógico, los vínculos que nos unen a los miembros de nuestro grupo se sostienen de forma casi pasiva. Estar presente en ciertas actividades, expresar de vez en cuando una opinión similar a la del resto del grupo, o simplemente vestir con los colores corporativos de la empresa en durante un meeting de la organización son conductas suficientes para demostrar implicación. Sin embargo, el mundo virtual exige una implicación grupal mucho más directa. Si no escribes en el foro donde te diste de alta, si no cuelgas fotos en tu red social, o no juegas con el personaje que creaste en World of Warcraft, ¿quién puede decir que formas parte de cada uno de esos grupos?
- RELACIONES INTRAGRUPALES: Como se desprende de las ideas expuestas anteriormente, el mundo analógico exige un alto grado de compromiso con los grupos a los que pertenecemos. Es decir, aunque los lazos se puedan mantener de forma pasiva, es imprescindible cumplir las normas mínimas de pertenencia, tales como realizar actividades destacadas para el grupo o emplear símbolos distintivos, para evitar el riesgo de marginación o exclusión. En cambio, en el mundo virtual apenas se nos puede exigir esa implicación, sencillamente porque apenas existen mecanismos de control social. Si a mí me expulsan del club de poker del Instituto por hacer trampas, no puedo volver a él. Sin embargo, si me echan de Bite Figth por trucar mi personaje, ¿cómo impedirme que cree uno nuevo, con distinto nombre e IP móvil?
- RELACIONES INTERGRUPALES: En el mundo analógico, un individuo que pertenezca a dos grupos enfrentados entre sí no podrá sostener esa pertenencia ambivalente durante mucho tiempo sin sufrir las consecuencias… Cosa que no ocurre en en el mundo virtual, donde las fronteras entre grupos sociales son mucho más laxas y difusas, y donde la pertenencia es mucho más difícil de rastrear y de controlar.
Ahora bien, una vez hemos analizado las diferencias entre nuestra identidad social analógica y digital, ¿será posible responder a aquellas preguntas que nos planteábamos en las dos entradas sobre identidad situada que precedieron a la que tienes en tu pantalla? ¿Es factible definir un conjunto de contextos, grupos y roles universales y estables para los internautas occidentales? Más aún, ¿somos los seres humanos capaces de organizar nuestra estructura cognitiva y social en estos términos? En próximas entradas intentaremos dar respuesta empírica a estas cuestiones.

I’ve been to all the sites to help out with removing the program however they all request that I change the LAN settings. I do this but seconds later they get automatically changed back. Whenever I open a file the message: “Application cannot be executed… file is infected” Therefore I am unable to run any programs such as Task Manager in order to counter this virus. Recently I was given a tablet. It came with the replacement nibs and a small metal thing and I Googled it but I can not work out what it is ^^ I would have thought the product came with additional info on the accessories.
