Viejas glorias, nuevas identidades, y emociones desconocidas
Si me pidieran una máxima para definir esta primera década del siglo XXI en la que nos encontramos inmersos, yo
me decantaría por reformular la Ley de conservación de la materia de Lavoisier: ni se crea ni se destruye, solamente se transforma. Y no hay más que ver las carteleras de los cines, las propuestas musicales, o los escaparates de las tiendas de ropa para comprender el sentido de mi afirmación.
Desde que George Lucas abriera la "caja de las precuelas" en 1999 con su Episodio I: La Amenaza Fantasma, el siglo XXI parece haberse convertido en un revival de viejas glorias y grandes mitos de años, que alcanza su culmen en estos días con el estreno de la cuarta entrega de Indiana Jones , vinculado esta vez a una roswelliana calavera de cristal.
He aquí por qué me decanto por la Ley de conservación de la materia para catalogar al siglo XXI: porque los viejos epítetos y las categorías estancas del pasado están sufriendo un proceso de reciclaje similar al del vidrio o el plástico, y lo que antes era "inútil", "ridículo", "vergonzoso" o "extraño" se convierte ahora en estandarte identitario no ya para un colectivo o una generación, sino incluso para todo un país, aún a pesar de la polémica suscitada al respecto.
Por supuesto, también sostengo que esta emergencia identitaria encuentra un caldo de cultivo extraordinario en el mundo digital, y muy especialmente en las redes sociales de Internet, que permiten compartir información y patrones de conducta a velocidades insospechadas, pero también ensayar facetas de personalidad en entornos "seguros" para la identidad analógica del usuario, que descubre la capacidad de hacer explícitas emociones tan intensas como la euforia, el orgullo o la animadversión sin arriesgarse a sufrir el ostracismo social por ello.
Sin embargo, aún parece que nos queda un buen trecho para que esas identidades virtuales adquieran una 
aceptación social completa. O al menos, eso podemos afirmar al ver los comentarios que suscita en la web uno de los últimos trabajos de ingeniería artificial presentados por el MIT: Nexi, el robot social, llamado así por su capacidad para expresar facialmente algunas emociones básicas del ser humano.

So not really on the same topic as your post, but I found this today and I just can’t resist sharing. Mrs. Agathe’s dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told him, “I’ll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I’ll mail you the check. Oh, and by the way…don’t worry about my Doberman. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT under ANY circumstances talk to my parrot!” When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Agathe’s apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Doberman he had ever seen. But just as she had said, the dog simply laid there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant cursing, yelling and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!” To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”
