¿Y si mi vida digital me sobrevive?
Recientemente he leído una interesante reflexión titulada "Personal Agents for Impersonal Interaction" (Agentes personales para la interacción impersonal) sobre los agentes "reminder" que te recuerdan el cumpleaños de un familiar o un amigo. Según comenta el autor, cada vez serán más frecuentes estos servicios y, por tanto, cada vez se recibirán más correos por parte de estos agentes solicitando tu fecha de cumpleaños para que alguien se acuerde de felicitarte. El autor propone ir un paso más allá y que un agente filtre las peticiones y las responda automáticamente. O incluso que el agente automáticamente elija la tarjeta de felicitación apropiada para la ocasión y la envíe. El autor sostiene que si esto se convierte en una realidad, a medida que estos servicios y tu red social se extiendan, no darás abasto para contestar a todas las felicitaciones que te lleguen el día de tu cumpleaños. Por tanto, deberán existir a su vez agentes que contesten con un "Gracias" a las felicitaciones. Cuando se llegue a este nivel de automatización de la interacción, los agentes seguirán enviando y respondiendo a felicitaciones incluso cuando las personas ya no estén en este mundo. 
En la entrada "El arte del olvido" de Juan, ya se hablaba de perpetuar nuestro recuerdo más allá de nuestra propia muerte. Y cuando arrancamos el proyecto del Yo Digital la utilidad del mismo como "Mi legado" estaba ya claramente identificada. Pero este legado del Yo Digital no sólo se refiere a mis recuerdos en forma de fotografías, escritos, canciones o hechos, sino también a mi personalidad, mis gustos y mis preferencias. En la medida en que mi Yo Digital vaya descubriendo todas mis facetas, evolucionando y aprendiendo de mí, llegará un momento en que debería ser capaz de intuir mis respuestas y acciones. A partir de ese momento mi Yo Digital podría sugerirme e incluso comprar los libros que me gustan o interesan, recomendarme cont
estar o no el teléfono según quien llame, gestionarme las vacaciones de mis sueños, etc.
Pero si mi Yo Digital también es capaz de predecir mis emociones, ¿podrá sustituirme y así seguir existiendo tras mi muerte?, ¿podrán mis tataranietos mantener una conversación conmigo como si todavía estuviera viva (suponiendo que les interese hablar conmigo)? Si esto fuera así, tendríamos algo parecido a las cabezas parlantes en conserva de la serie Futurama. O siendo catastrofistas, incluso puede que en unos cuantos años el hombre haya acabado con la especie humana, y tengamos un mundo poblado exclusivamente por identidades digitales.
Llegados a este punto, seguramente podremos distinguir dos grupos personas según su opinión al respecto. Las que opinan que es maravilloso poder seguir viviendo tras la muerte y que las generaciones futuras puedan conversar con personas como Nelson Mandela , Bruce Springsteen o Bill Gates (ídolos los hay de todos los tipos). Y las que les viene a la cabeza algo como la canción de Queen "Who wants to live for ever?" (¿Quién quiere vivir para siempre?) y la mítica película "Los inmortales". ¿A qué grupo pertences tú?
Te recomiendo “Ciudad Permutación” de Greg Egan, donde se trata indirectamente este tema. La premisa es que la replicación computación de las funciones cerebrales hace posible una existencia virtual e indefinida de las personas “reales”.

Bueno… la base de ‘Ciudad Permutación’ empieza en esta clase de reflexiones, pero va muchísimo más allá al explorar la naturaleza de la consciencia y de su continuidad. Sería algo así: si la consciencia es una experiencia subjetiva y ‘continua’, ¿cómo es posible que sobrevenga la muerte de la misma? La finalización abrupta de la consciencia implicaría una discontinuidad ‘absurda’ por la propia naturaleza de la consciencia, y por lo tanto es en ‘realidad’ imposible. De ahí se pasa a una teoría sobre lo que pasa con las consciencias ‘abruptamente detenidas’ y finalmente a la locura del resto del libro…
Para mi sorpresa he escuchado a gente muy razonable haciendo discursos en este mismo sentido (es decir… no es posible que esto se acabe sin más, mi experiencia subjetiva es tan… importante que simplemente no puede ‘detenerse sin más’) por ejemplo se lo escuché a Ana María Matute y a otros escritores, así que sospecho que la tesis de ‘Ciudad Permutación’ aunque un tanto abstracta y elaborada, casa con la base de creencia de bastantes personas.
Hay una aproximación a este tema más cercana a lo que se ha propuesto en este artículo en obras literarias más antiguas. Creo que las más destacadas serían los libros finales de ‘la Saga de los Heechees’ de Frederick Phol.
Hay algunas reflexiones similares que parte de la presunción de ‘ciudadanos revividos’ en obras de Greg Bear (no estoy seguro, pero en una de las obras entroncada en el ‘mundo’ de ‘La Reina de los Angeles’, se plantea un viaje estelar y uno de los protagonistas es directamente un ciudadano que sólo existe en su representación virtual).
Por cierto, a parte de que me parece que será básicamente imposible capturar la complejidad de nuestras redes neuronales a un nivel de detalle mínimo como para que parezcamos nosotros mismos, yo no soy de ninguno de esos dos tipos de personas. Yo creo que tanto da… si haces una copia de mi mente en una ‘caja’ mientras me muero yo no viviré por siempre, lo hará la ‘caja’. Y que haya por ahí tras mi muerte un johan-caja haciéndose pasar por mí, tal vez hasta disfrutando de los placeres que a mí me gustaban no le sirve mucho al johan que soy ahora y que acabará incinerado igualmente.
Considerad que si se puede copiar mi mente a una caja, se puede hacer muchas veces, tantas como se desee, ¿habría entonces múltiples johans? ¿Cuál sería yo? Evidentemente ninguno de ellos, como mucho serían entidades conscientes ‘inspiradas’ en mi mente actual.
